8 Tips for Students Starting College

Digital PR Skills I Learned

July 23, 2026

Throughout this course, I learned that digital public relations is much more than just posting on social media. Before this class, I knew social media was important for brands, but I did not realize how much strategy, research, and planning goes into creating successful digital communication. Looking back at the modules and assignments, I learned several skills that I will be able to use in my future PR career.

Creating Strategic Social Media Content

One of the biggest things I learned was that social media content needs a purpose behind it. Through assignments like my Airbnb Situation Analysis and Strategic Plan, I learned how to research an organization, identify opportunities, create campaign ideas, and connect tactics back to a larger goal.

In my future career, this will help me create social media content that is not only creative but also supports an organization’s objectives.

Understanding Metrics and Measuring Success

Before this course, I mostly thought social media success was based on likes and followers. However, I learned the difference between vanity metrics and KPIs and why measuring the right things matters.

Understanding analytics will help me show clients whether a campaign is actually making an impact instead of just focusing on numbers that do not tell the whole story.

Improving Digital Writing and Storytelling

Through creating blog posts, I learned how important it is to write in a way that feels natural and connects with an audience. I learned that digital messages need context, visuals, and a conversational tone to keep people interested.

This skill will help me create stronger blogs, social media posts, and other digital communications in future PR roles.

Building Relationships Through Digital Communication

One of the most important things I learned is that digital PR is about building relationships, not just sharing messages. Social media gives organizations the opportunity to interact with audiences, respond to feedback, and create conversations.

This will help me create communication strategies that focus on engagement and building trust.

The biggest takeaway I have from this course is that successful digital communication requires both creativity and strategy. Knowing how to create content is important, but understanding why you are creating it and how to measure the results is what makes communication effective.
